English is always a subject of debate. The one in this article is about the fluency of accredited students with a B2 level. But is it really considered B2 fluent in English?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) divides language learning into six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.
Each level describes the linguistic abilities that a user should have in the four basic skills: oral comprehension, written comprehension, oral expression and written expression.
In this article, we will focus on the B2 level of English, which corresponds to the independent user with the language. According to the CEFR, a person with this level can:
- Understand the main ideas of complex texts dealing with both concrete and abstract topics, even if they are of a technical nature as long as they are within their field of specialization.
- Interact with native speakers with a sufficient degree of fluency and naturalness so that communication is effortless for either party.
- Produce clear and detailed texts on diverse topics, as well as defend a point of view on general topics indicating the pros and cons of different options.
But what does it mean to be fluent in English at the B2 level? Fluency is a concept that can have different interpretations depending on the context and the communicative objective. However, it can be defined as the ability to speak a language continuously, coherently, accurately and appropriately to the situation.
To speak English fluently at the B2 level, it is necessary to have a sufficient command of the vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and intonation of the language. In addition, it is necessary to have confidence and security when expressing oneself, as well as to use strategies to maintain the conversation, resolve doubts and avoid mistakes.
According to a study conducted by the University of Cambridge, speakers at B2 level can produce oral speeches with an average length of 3 minutes and 40 seconds, using a variety of linguistic resources to organize their ideas, connect their arguments and give examples.
Likewise, they can participate in oral interactions with an average duration of 4 minutes and 20 seconds, showing interest, respect and courtesy towards their interlocutor, as well as the ability to negotiate meaning, ask for clarification and reformulate their interventions.
However, speaking English fluently at the B2 level does not mean speaking perfect, unaccented English. It is normal to make some mistakes or have some difficulties in understanding or expressing certain nuances or cultural aspects of the language. The important thing is that they do not interfere with effective communication or the transmission of the message.
