If today we are asking ourselves what are the effects of Artificial Intelligence in Education, it is because the presence of platforms like ChatGPT are a reality in our lives.

To ignore the fact that elementary and high school students saw in Artificial Intelligence chats an opportunity to do their homework faster, is to cover the sun with a finger.

Of course, teachers may try to prohibit such tools, but in the end it is inevitable that students will end up using them.

In fact, according to data from a study done by education software company Aulica, leveraging Artificial Intelligence can have positive impacts on education:

  • Stimulate personalized and collaborative learning.
  • Facilitate teaching.
  • Measuring student performance.
  • Simplify educational management.
  • To increase the competitiveness of the institution.
  • Open the doors to high quality education.

According to the same study, Artificial Intelligence (AI) also means that routine teacher tasks and data analysis can be performed faster and more effectively.

Effects of Artificial Intelligence in education for students.

As for how students can leverage AI to learn really effectively, there are several ways AI can help. In an Aulica article, four ways AI helps students learn are mentioned:

  1. Educational AI allows for a more personal approach to teaching. How do students learn best? What are your strengths and weaknesses? AI can answer these questions and tailor instruction to the individual needs of each student.
  2. Technology can present material in understandable terms: AI can help students better understand the material presented. For example, AI can provide additional explanations or examples to help students better understand a concept.
  3. Students can use AI to give feedback: You can provide immediate feedback to students on their performance. This can help students identify areas in which they need to improve and adjust their study approach accordingly.
  4. AI can pinpoint the most effective pedagogical strategies: It can analyze large amounts of data to identify the most effective pedagogical strategies. This can help educators improve their teaching and provide students with a more effective learning experience.

Effects of Artificial Intelligence in education for teachers.

If we talk about how teachers can leverage AI to improve their classrooms, there are several ways AI can help. In a Lucaedu article, five ways teachers can use AI in education are mentioned.

  1. Identify new topics of study: Artificial Intelligence can help teachers identify new topics of study and develop new courses.
  2. Virtual tutors: Tools such as ChatGPT can provide virtual tutoring to students. This can help them receive additional help outside of class time.
  3. Personalized learning materials: It can help teachers create personalized learning materials for each student.
  4. Online teacher refresher courses: Helps teachers stay current in their field of study.
  5. Dropout risk prediction: Allows teachers to identify students who are at risk of dropping out of school. Thus, teachers have the opportunity to intervene early and provide students with the help they need to succeed.

Effects of Artificial Intelligence on Language Learning

An analysis by Edu Magazine mentions that the use of Artificial Intelligence in language learning is based on the design of technological systems that try to mimic the kinds of things that humans have done in the past and have benefited the educational process in terms of speed, efficiency and cost.

Online learning applications and platforms use speech recognition algorithms and technologies to identify and correct pronunciation and grammar errors in real time.

However, this type of software still lacks the ability to interpret the characteristics and pedagogical processes of each student, so -at least for the next few years- Artificial Intelligence will remain a valuable tool only to enhance what is learned in language classes with qualified teachers.

In any case, at Lingua Language Center, we believe in the use of technology to enhance educational processes, so we invite our students to take advantage of Artificial Intelligence in their personal practices.

For example, so far we have had good experiences in the use of Artificial Intelligence to increase vocabulary: students can ask Bing or ChatGPT for a list of verbs with their translation, or be more specific and ask for everyday words, or words from the usual jargon of a profession.

This type of practice allows you to memorize concepts without the need to look in dictionaries or rely on what is available on Google. So with AI everything is always more personalized.
