American Language and Culture

American Language and Culture

It helps you prepare for the Florida Civic Literacy Test, required for graduating from higher education

This course focuses on critical thinking and debate, as well as reading and writing skills through research projects. Students will learn the language of the American government, study vocabulary related to US history and culture, and will engage in spirited conversation practice with peers regarding cultural aspects of the regional United States. 

The course prepares students for the Florida Civics Literacy Exam, from learning the 27 amendments of the US Constitution and how the Supreme Court relates to them, as well as an array of other related topics. This exam is required for graduation for Bachelor’s and Associate’s degrees in the state of Florida.

The course content includes new vocabulary related to American government and history and discussions will include topics such as: the history of the colonists, founding fathers, immigration, roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments; the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government; landmark Supreme Court cases that have shaped US life and culture, and the rights and obligations of all American citizens.

Literature and Composition

Enjoy literary masterpieces and write with style

This course is designed to enable students to analyze literature, including poetry, short stories, novels/novellas, and plays. Students will develop an understanding of literary themes, devices and terminology to enable them to begin to express critiques and analysis of literature by reading and analyzing texts as they explore concepts like character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and literary analysis in the context of literary works. Students will write literary analyses papers as well as other types of essays and written works and will present their topics to the class. Students will also be engaged in creative writing practice.
